Q: Do I sign my work?

A: Yes, all of my work is signed and also dated with the year I made it.

Q: What kind of clay do I use?

A: I work with a stoneware clay with the addition of granular magenese added to it that helps my glazes react very nicely.

Q: Are my glazes food safe?

A: Yes, I only work with glazes that are food safe. There is no lead or barium in any of my glazes. All of my pottery is functional, food friendly, and made to be used everyday.

Q: How long have I been in business?

A: Jane Bess Pottery, LLC started in November 2006 in downtown historic Edgefield, SC.

Q: When did I discover my love of pottery making?

A: It was in the summer of 2002. I took an evening class in Aiken, SC at a private studio called Southern Moon Pottery.

Q: Do I take custom orders / special commissions?

A: Yes I do. A large part of my everyday work is making special items for clients. I can work with you to create a custom, one of-a-kind piece of pottery or even a complete dinnerware set that compliments your style and glaze preferences. Contact me to discuss further details.

Q: Have I always been artistic?

A: Yes I have. Ever seen I have been a child I have had a creative spirit. As a child I worked with paints, crayons, magic markers, colored pencils, and of course playdough! My artistic abilities continued with me in high school where I was actively involved in art classes and attended the S.C. Governer's School for the Arts at Furman University. In 1985, I continued my education and attended the University of Georgia and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Interior Design and Art. After college graduation, I worked for many prestigious companies including Brunschwig & Fils, The Georgia Trust for Historic Preservation, and the High Museum of Art. Today, I am a full-time professional potter and will always continue to expand my artistic abilities. In my sparetime, I enjoy photography and recently have started to sell my landscape photographs of the Carolina countryside.
